Every scientist will tell you that their field of science is the best field of science, the most fundamentally important to all science. I may be a bit biased, but I will today argue that chemistry is the best science. Why? Because chemistry describes the very stuff that makes up everything in the universe, from distant stars to the tiniest cells in your body, and how this stuff behaves on the tiniest level to allow everything that happens in the universe—from the birth, life, and death of distant stars to the birth, life, and death of the tiniest cells in your body—to happen. To have a basic understanding of chemistry is to have a basic understanding of literally everything in the universe. When you start to get a grasp on that, you start to realize just how many more secrets the universe still hides, how much left there is to be discovered and learned, and how little we can really know about anything. And that is a very exciting realization!! It means that there will always be more to know. It means that the universe is full of near-endless possibilities. It means that, while we can guess and theorize all we want about how things should behave if they behave within all known laws—and, in doing so, almost always guess right—you can never really know until you test it. So get ready. Get prepared. Get absolutely EXCITED!! Because this is exciting stuff.
(But I guess the other sciences are pretty cool, too).
